South Eugene High School - Alpha Chapter
National Honor Society is a national organization with chapters in high schools across the US. At South Eugene, membership in National Honor Society is through selection by a five-member NHS Faculty Council in spring of each school year.
Interested students may apply in April of their sophomore or junior year, and must have a minimum 3.6 cumulative grade point average, along with evidence of leadership, service, and character.
Please note: Eligibility does not confer membership. Students must complete and submit an information packet, essay, and transcript by the published date. Students are carefully considered and selected by the NHS Faculty Council. Membership is awarded to those students who best demonstrate achievement in the four standards:
- Scholarship
- Leadership
- Character
- Service
Selected students are inducted in a special National Honor Society ceremony in May, and begin their membership in the fall of the following school year.
Calendar dates for packet submission and new member selection are published in March.
National Honor Society members
- maintain a 3.6 cumulative GPA
- serve the community and school through 25 hours of community service each semester
- attend monthly NHS meetings
- participate in at least one NHS group project (3 hours) each semester
The yearly 50 hours of community service required by the National Honor Society may also be applied to “District 4J Honors Diploma” hours. Some hours may also overlap with IHS community service requirements.
